AUSIT – the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators
The heart of the Translating and Interpreting industry is the professional expertise and ethics of its
practitioners.
AUSIT, the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators, is the country's major professional
association which draws together many of the most active and committed members of the profession.
An extremely influential contribution from AUSIT is its Code of Ethics, which is now universally adopted as the
standard of practice for translators and interpreters (see
www.ausit.org).
A vigorous program of professional development is also provided by AUSIT. And AUSIT gives public recognition to
good practice in the industry: our company under our brand All Graduates won the first inaugural Excellence
Award in 2004 given by the Victorian/Tasmanian branch of AUSIT for our innovatory on-line booking system for
clients and interpreters, another facet of our Translation and Interpreting operations.
Adherence to the AUSIT code of ethics gives us a benchmark for measuring performance and a guideline for
ethical problems that do arise: all our contract translators and interpreters must abide by this Code as a
condition of work with us. AUSIT's desire to see high standards in the profession matches our own desire to
provide a premium translation service, made possible only by ensuring we work with the very best credentialed
and most ethical translators on the one hand, and by our attentiveness to client needs on the other.
There is a direct link between quality for the client and the Code of Ethics through its stipulations of
accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, impartiality and recognition of limits in one's professional practice.
From our side as a translation agency, we also reflect these principles in our relations with clients - we often
handle sensitive or commercial-in-confidence texts; we work with translators and clients to ensure the full
meaning of texts is clearly conveyed and will advise on texts for appropriateness for translation; we deal
fairly with both translators and clients to ensure satisfactory outcomes and consideration for all.
