FIT - International Federation of Translators
The Fédération International des Traducteurs (FIT - International Federation of Translators) is an umbrella
body that unites almost all significant Translating and Interpreting professional associations around the world.
It arose in the early 1950s when the European translating and interpreting associations were reconstituting
themselves after the devastation of World War II to provide a forum for common professional issues.
This post-war period however had also brought a new set of stimuli to the Translating and Interpreting profession:
the successful introduction of simultaneous interpreting at the Nuremberg war trials, the growth of international
associations particularly the United Nations, and the modest beginnings of European integration all brought
increased international contact and consequently increased work and status for professional translators and
interpreters.
FIT developed and still operates under the auspices of UNESCO, which was keen to encourage high
standards in language services to meet international needs. FIT's influential journal Babel has been published
since 1954. With membership now far beyond Europe, its triennial international congresses have attracted
participants from around 100 countries.
Just as FIT emerged as the global player in professional associations, so Meaningful Exchange is a global player
in technical translation. For us, the professional standing and credential of our contract translators matter,
as we constantly seek to match translators with particular expertise with the translation needs of our clients.
Many of the translators we contract have gained the highest certification possible through their professional
associations or other certification and accreditation bodies, and have experience in the diverse areas in which
we translate, for example in localisation, medical translations, engineering or the translation of administrative
and regulatory texts.
Our translation managers are charged with finding the right match of translator expertise
for your work, and take you through the translation process from initial discussion of needs and comments on
text suitability, to a finished product in your preferred media.
